The first review of our CARA-nominated album, "Late Nights, Parades," is in! And Melinda Thomas seems to love it!

"All in all, Late Nights, Parades is a sleek, surprising, and gutsy group of songs from some very talented, smart, independent, powerful young women – well worth checking out."

You can purchase "Late Nights, Parades" through A Cappella Records or iTunes.

AcappellaFest Was Awesome!
Posted By: Chloe Atchue-Mamlet | 10/27/2012, 10:41 PM

So AcappellaFest happened. And it was amazeballs. On Friday, we had the pleasure of hosting the collegiate competition (congrats again to the WashU Stereotypes on the much-deserved victory!), which was super fun. We had a blast hanging with the groups backstage and getting to meet a lot of people. It was also our first performance of the year with the new girls, so we were all so excited. In addition to the competing groups, we saw performances by the oh-so-talented Voices in Your Head, our co-hosts, and our new obsession: Six Appeal. We thought our "Cherry Pie" choreography was tough, but these guys literally jumped around on stage for their entire set and still sounded absolutely amazing. Get it.

On Saturday, we attended the most wonderful and informative workshops. Our very own Brianne Holland taught one for the first time, and it was on how groups can challenge the expectations an audience might have of their performance based on the gender of the group. Naturally, it was called "Sex on Stage." She did us proud. We also had our masterclass with Kathy Hoye, Benjamin McLain, and Rachel Bearer of Sonos, which was incredible and so helpful. On Saturday night, Sonos and The Edge Effect performed, and both were jaw-dropping.

We had such a wonderful experience at AcappellaFest, and we're exhausted but incredibly inspired. The first-ever mid-west CASA festival was a huge success, and we are so thrilled to have been a part of it. We want to thank CASA for putting on such a truly fantastic festival and asking us to host it, as well as Kathy, Ben, and Rachel for the wonderful masterclass. Until next time!

AcappellaFest Tomorrow!
Posted By: Chloe Atchue-Mamlet | 10/18/2012, 1:04 PM

We are so, SO excited for tomorrow! Friday night, there will be a collegiate competition hosted by us and Voices in Your Head. On Saturday, there will be a professional showcase featuring The Edge Effect and Sonos that's sure to be amazing!

While we are very excited for the festival in general, and we feel honored to be hosing it, AcappellaFest marks the beginning of a resurgence of a midwestern a cappella community. The east and west coasts have resources and a strong sense of community that helps their groups really thrive. While there is an a cappella community in the midwest, it is still developing, and the first midwest CASA festival is sure to help it grow. We are so excited to meet and interact with other groups and the community as a whole!

If you still haven't bought tickets, you can do so here, and if you use the promo code MID, you get $10 off!

See you there!

New Girls!

We are so so thrilled to announce the addition of three new girls, and one returning girl to Men in Drag!

Simone Aldredge, Frances Bernstein, Jordan Miller-Surratt, and Aya Smith are the best newbies we could ever ask for. They are sassy, sweet, extremely talented, and just all-together amazing. We are so excited to have them on board and for you all to meet them either at AcappellaFest or our album release concert!

Welcome to the family, girls!

Love,

The Lovely Ladies of MiD

Audition Season Updates and Important Dates
Posted By: Chloe Atchue-Mamlet | 09/27/2012, 9:22 AM

Well friends, auditions are upon us! Whether you know you'd like to audition for us or you're still thinking about it, we encourage you to go to these events to get more information on all the a cappella groups. Also, if you'd like to read a blog post on why you should audition and learn more about what MiD is all about, you can do so here.

On Thursday, September 27, there will be an RSO open house at 4pm in Hutch courtyard (right behind Reynolds). All the groups will have tables there so you can talk with members, learn more about them, and sign up for auditions. Men in Drag will have candy. Come for the candy.

On Monday, October 1, come to the A Cappella Showcase at 9pm in Hutch Commons (in Reynolds). You'll get to see all seven groups sing, and it's the best way to get a sense of our personality and style.

Auditions are Tuesday and Wednesday (October 2-3) from 5-10 in Cobb. You can sign up for a 7-minute slot at either of the events mentioned above, or by emailing us at mid@menindrag.org. All the groups will have auditions at the same time, so it's very easy to audition for multiple groups.

Callbacks will be held on Friday the 5th at 6pm in Cobb. Make sure you keep this night free, as there are no make-ups.

Once you sign up for an audition with us, make sure to keep an eye on your email, because this is our primary way of communicating with you.

If you have any questions about the audition process, be sure to check out our FAQ page, and if it's not answered there, email us at mid@menindrag.org. We can't wait to hear you sing!

Our Weekend at BOSS!
Posted By: Chloe Atchue-Mamlet | 04/16/2012, 2:44 PM

We had the most amazing weekend at the Boston Sings A Cappella Festival! We traveled with our all-star friends, Voices in Your Head, and had the pleasure of placing fourth in the collegiate competition on Friday night with "Cherry Pie" & "Hurt." All the other groups were absolutely incredible, and Ball in the House were GREAT hosts! In addition, our music director Brianne Holland won 2 awards: the 2012 CARA for Best Female Collegiate Arrangement for "On the Wing," and the goofy "Quick Change Award" for her quick costume changes between MiD and ViYH's sets.

We had a great time at the workshops on Saturday, and a terrific masterclass with Hannah Juliano and Kari Francis of Musae! They gave us excellent feedback on our music, and we are so grateful that they took time to work with us. On Saturday night, we saw several phenomenal professional groups perform, including Redline, Cadence, and the especially inspiratonal Traces.

BOSS was an incredible experience for all of us. We're exhausted, but so motivated and inspired. Thank you CASA for a great weekend!

MiD Headed to Boston!
Posted By: Brianne Holland | 03/15/2012, 2:17 AM

In April, Men in Drag is headed to the Boston Sings A Cappella Festival! We, along with our friends Voices in Your Head, are proud to be representing the University of Chicago on a national scale. This festival is a great opportunity for us to learn from some amazing professional groups, teachers, and collegiate peers.

But wait, there's more. We've been selected to be one of the six groups performing in the Collegiate Competition, which will coincide with the live CARA Awards Ceremony. We've got our prom dresses picked out for the red carpet, our ties are ready for our competition set, and we're stoked to show the east coast what we're all about!

A thousand thanks to the University for pulling through on funding, and a thousand more to our friends and families supporting us! We're excited to see some of you in Boston!

Congratulations to our amazingly talented and wonderful music director, Brianne Holland, for her Best Female Collegiate Arrangement CARA (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award) nomination for Men in Drag's latest single, "On the Wing"! We couldn't be more excited!

"On the Wing" was previously featured on the international compilation album, Voices Only 2011, and you can check out the track on iTunes!

About Men in Drag
Men in Drag (no men, occasional drag) is an all-female student a cappella group at the University of Chicago. These ladies take a fun, creative approach to performing with their distinctive spin on popular songs of all genres. The members of Men in Drag embrace all that the name implies, challinging gender conventions, bringing sass and class to the all-female a cappella genre, and holding themselves to a high standard of modern musical entertainment. Whether they are rocking out in ties or high-heels, the ladies of Men in Drag are always ready to shake things up. Their recent single, “On the Wing,” was featured on the international a cappella compilation album, Voices Only 2011, and they are currently in the process of recording their upcoming album.
